  1. very interesting topics this time 🙂
about the airport-scanner: IMHO the only thing that it does is creating a *false* feeling of security, a feeling that the government is in control of the situation (even though, very likely, it isn’t). The restricted amount of fluids that you’re allowed to carry with you in your hand-luggage is just a further example.
There’s this discussion in Germany at the moment, where the government even came up with the idea to constrain freedom of the press in order to “fight terrorism”, even though, rationally, the chance of dying in a terrorist attack in Germany is *way* lower than dying in a car accident for example. And allegedly, the bomb which that terrorist had with him, the one that was caught last December, was actually hidden behind his scrotum, therefore very likely to be invisible for the new scanners. So unless you perform a cavity search on *every* passenger as well as x-ray every bit of luggage and mail that you carry on a plane, there might just not be safety on flights.
I think Madge’s observation with 1st-class-travellers backs my theory that the whole point is not to prevent anything from happening, but to create an appearance of some divine (aka. governmental) force being in control of the situation as a reply to an irrational reaction by the public (collective).

  2. You know, Mr. Bean stuck his head up a turkey, I think it was on the christmas-episode. I’m sure at least Auntie Vera remembers that one…

  3. Yes the Israeli method of airport security is effective, but how many commercial airports does Israel have? Surely no more than 5 major airports, even at that. Applying the same standards to the hundreds of Airports here would be far too difficult and costly. I’m not saying it shouldn’t be done, but I seriously doubt it would even be proposed in the deficit/austerity obsessed state this nation is in.

  4. Good show. One point; undetectable doesn’t mean no virus in blood of the infected person, but rather not enough virus for it to be detected by the tests available today. An HIV+ person with undetectable viral load is still capable of transmitting HIV.

  5. Apparently, Moscow’s Domodedovo airport used full body scanners for years, and we see now well that worked there…
