  1. If your looking for a popular singer who can actual, you know, sing, I would suggest Adele. She’s not earth shaking but she’s pretty damn good.
    Bonus: She’s a fatty!

  2. Oh goddamn, I just wrote a big post, went to copy it before posting in case something f-d up and must have mashed the keyboard as the whole thing turned into a big “C”. *sigh*
    Lovely Showgrum Ladies.

  3. Oh, Birgit Nilsson was an amazing Brünnhilde!!! Sooooooo goooooooood! Hojotoho!
I do like myself a Linda Watson in terms of contemporary interpretations…
Renée Fleming is wonderful when she does Strauss, I do not however see her do Wagner. Interesting topic though, I wish Madge would talk more opera and less prolapse’n’angels on her grums.

  4. re: the discussion on new media in the hands of amateurs: It is precisely the fact that anybody with a computer and microphone can do a podcast or put a video up on youtube that makes new media fascinating and a delight to me. Sure, 98% of those who contribute videos or podcasts could never make it on real radio or television — but if I wanted/needed that kind of professionalism, I’d listen to real radio or watch real television.

There’s this one dude on youtube who contributes frequently with commentary on news, movies and entertainment. His lighting sucks; when he tries to use chroma key effects, they suck; he looks doofy, he talks doofy, etc etc — but he is so earnest and sincere that I watch it week after week. I LOVE the fact that in today’s world there is a means for that big doofy schmuck to put his content out there. I LOVE discovering these people out there.

Everyone and anyone has been able to paint or draw pictures for centuries. There’s a ton of really bad paintings, photographs and drawings hidden away in attics, found at garage sales etc. that most of us would ever put up on our walls. This is nothing new. Grandma Moses couldn’t draw worth a damn. But her paintings still offer those who appreciate them a home-spun charm.

The internets will forever and always be littered with amateur work that will no doubt be forgotten or never even discovered almost as soon as it’s out there. But for those who can appreciate this kind of home-spun work, it’s fun to riffle through the virtual garage sales and attics of the interwebs — you never know what you might find.

  5. OK, the post i was going to make was essentially that when listening to this show whilst walking to work I realised that I’d listened to so many hours of you gal’s podcasts that I probably know you better than I know the friends, colleagues people I know physically.
Is this something to be concerned about?
It’s been hypothesises that soap operas & similar tv shows have been fulfilling people’s social needs that they’re not getting from their actual communities. Could they and podcasts be doing the reverse, that instead of replacing they could be crowding out people’s social space that would normally taken up with their local community?

  6. Why do Vera and the Rlich not get along? Is it because cheryl mentions the vast amounts of Gin Vera consumes each evening?
